# Cybersecurity for equipment manufacturers

Protect the systems that connect a machine's design to its delivery.

Equipment manufacturers handle engineering files, configured orders and service relationships that continue long after shipment. BitLyft's Agentic Managed Detection and Response (AMDR) helps investigate threats across supported IT systems, with human oversight when response could affect assembly, commissioning or customer support.

## Security across engineering, assembly and field service

A machine builder's valuable information rarely stays in one system. CAD files become bills of materials; purchased components become configured builds; field technicians use service records to support equipment at a customer's site. Compromise of a single employee or service account can connect otherwise separate parts of that workflow.

Equipment manufacturing cybersecurity should account for both the factory and the installed base. An endpoint used to develop a design may need different response rules from a technician's laptop during commissioning. That distinction should be available before a suspicious event becomes an urgent decision.

## Cybersecurity exposure across the equipment lifecycle

### Engineering account compromise

Stolen credentials can expose drawings, control-software repositories or customer specifications. Investigating access changes alongside supported endpoint evidence helps determine whether an engineering account is being misused.

### Disrupted configured-order workflows

Unavailable ERP and planning applications can make it difficult to connect the right components with the right build. An incident's impact may include downstream assembly and shipment dependencies.

### Field-service laptop threats

Technicians may connect to multiple customer environments and carry sensitive service information. Device ownership, remote-access permissions and current assignments are important context for an investigation.

### Supplier mailbox fraud

Long lead-time purchases and component substitutions generate frequent email exchanges. Compromised accounts can be used to request unexpected payments or introduce misleading procurement instructions.

### Excessive support privileges

Shared support credentials and standing administrative access can create unnecessary exposure. Review who needs access to internal systems and who is permitted to support customer-owned equipment.

### Acquisition and subsidiary gaps

An acquired product line may retain separate tools, directories and service practices. A single group-level contract does not establish that every subsidiary's systems are sending usable security evidence.

## Investigate threats with the equipment lifecycle in view

BitLyft can correlate supported security activity around an engineer, purchasing employee or service technician so your team can assess the incident in context. An investigation should identify the affected resources and the practical consequences of the available response.

AMDR combines managed SOC expertise with BitLyft AIR® investigation and permitted routine response. Your response plan can reserve decisions affecting assembly, commissioning and customer connections for human review, while allowing suitable actions on ordinary business systems within agreed policies.

### Distinguish internal and customer ownership

An OEM may own a service laptop without owning the customer's network or machine. Define where your provider has authority and how customer coordination works when an incident involves both parties.

### Give engineering a voice in containment

Document critical design repositories, software-build dependencies and active commissioning work. The service needs a way to reach someone who understands those dependencies when access must be restricted.

## Example: suspicious activity on a commissioning technician's laptop

This illustrative sequence is a planning exercise for a device with both corporate and customer-facing responsibilities.

### Confirm the assignment

Identify the technician, current customer engagement and any authorized remote connection before treating the activity as unexpected.

### Assess the connected evidence

Review supported endpoint and account signals to determine whether the laptop or corporate credentials may be compromised.

### Contain within the agreed authority

Coordinate an approved device or account action with the service manager, and follow the established customer notification route if their environment may be involved.

## Prepare an OEM-specific response scope

**Step 1**

### List critical engineering systems

Map design storage, source control, ERP, identity services and technician devices to the tools that can provide security telemetry.

**Step 2**

### Record commissioning exceptions

Identify customer-access agreements, active service jobs and approval requirements for devices supporting an installation.

**Step 3**

### Test the escalation chain

Confirm engineering, service and IT contacts can make decisions outside their normal shifts, and review the plan as product lines or subsidiaries change.

## Equipment Manufacturing cybersecurity questions

Does MDR for an equipment manufacturer cover machines sold to customers?

Customer-owned machines are not automatically included. Scope normally starts with your organization's supported accounts, endpoints and applications. Any work involving the installed base needs explicit authorization, compatible telemetry and a clear division of responsibility among your company, the customer and the security provider.

Can we include CAD and engineering data in the security discussion?

Yes. Identify where the files live, who can access them and which identity, endpoint or application evidence is available. MDR investigates suspicious activity using connected sources; it should be considered alongside your controls for design permissions, backups and intellectual property handling.

How is a field-service endpoint different from an office laptop?

A service device may support commissioning, diagnostics or access governed by a customer's contract. Those dependencies can change the impact of isolation or account suspension. Label the device's role and define its response permissions before applying the same policy used for an ordinary office endpoint.

Can AMDR support separate equipment brands or business units?

Coverage can be planned across business units, but the inventory needs to show their actual tools, account boundaries and incident owners. Different directories or endpoint products may require separate integrations and policies. Confirm the technical scope rather than assume a shared brand or parent company makes coverage uniform.

What should our service department contribute to onboarding?

Provide the remote-access methods it uses, the ownership of service accounts, escalation contacts and any customer restrictions on response. Include a process for telling security when a technician's assignment or access changes, especially for high-impact commissioning and warranty work.
